Green Initiatives Play Vital Role at Sheraton Maui

Energy Conservation & Green Programs
at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa

We invite you into the inner workings of our resort as we continue to recognize the importance of minimizing our environmental impact.

In 1997, after a $160 million renovation, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa reopened with a renewed emphasis on energy conservation. Our Green programs have been improving ever since, and we are proud to hold the title of  "Most Energy Efficient Hotel" in North America for Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Some of our environmental achievements include:

  • In 2007 alone, we recycled 1200 tons of plastic, 2200 tons of cardboard and 4000 tons of glass. All of the proceeds were donated to our Sheraton Maui fundraising effort: Starwish Charity

  • We have implemented the use of biodegradable corn cups poolside, to minimize our plastic consumption

  • We have reduced the amount of time our tiki torches are lit, reducing our propane gas usage

  • Using the most advanced technology, we installed energy efficient chillers with heat pumps to recover waste heat for the hot water system.

  • A computerized energy management system was installed to control the delivery of air conditioning in the guest rooms and photocells for our landscape lighting.

  • The irrigation systems for our well-manicured landscape now use an as-needed sensing system for both drip lines and sprinklers. The approximate savings from this system is 6,557,377 gallons per year.

  • We save millions of gallons of water a year with our "Green Laundry Program", giving guests the option not to have sheets and towels washed daily.
